52 Bible Drills (46 completed)
compiled by Dr. Don Lyles
Several years ago I attended an ACSI
(Association of Christian Schools International) convention in Sacramento. One of the shocking, to me, features was that
only about a dozen teachers of Bible even knew about Bible Drills of the
several hundred present at a seminar presented by MaryLou McCauley. Now with two computers on my desk at home,
this is no problem for me to turn out this book.
Bible Drills were the foundation of my
Bible learning growing up. Drills are
still the foundation for many forms of learning in the younger years. Multiplication tables are not memorized, just
by going over each "family" once or twice, but are also learned by
mixing them up. Repetition is the key
to memory.
When I taught Sixth Grade Math, I had
a page of easy problems that we added, multiplied, divided or subtracted each
day of class. At the beginning of the
year, I gave my students 3-4 minutes to do 100 Math problems, by the end of the
year, many could do these problems in less than 1 minute and were visibly
irritated we were moving so slow. Bible
Drills are much the same. The first time,
the students may gripe and complain how difficult. But after just a couple of weeks, they will begin to be quite
fast. Used each time they meet, and by
the end of the year, you will hardly notice the time in Sunday School,
Children's Church, or the Christian Day School classroom.
I have added one feature to my drills,
content. As a kid, people would just
open up the Bible and give us a verse.
Each of my drills has a theme. I
believe guys like me that can't find the verses so fast (I never won, but sure
learned how to find Bible passages quickly) should be able to listen and get a
point for my team.
Getting students quiet after they find
the scripture verse can be the most anger-vating problem. I require everyone to be quiet before anyone
reads God's Holy Word. If a student
can't be quiet and I must speak more than once during the drill, I deduct one
point from their team's points.
Usually, after the first point is deducted, they keep their own team
members disciplined. But they also want
to listen because they can get a point by deciding what the topic is on this
time.
By the way, there isn't a unique way
to run each drill, but you should do it the same time each time. I always begin by viewing each student, the
Bible held high with a hand held high on both sides. Second, I gave the passage clearly and loudly. Third, I make the students repeat back to me
the passage. Then, I say,
"GO". Go is the only word
that works, "begin", "start", etc. don't count, this adds a
shade of humor occasionally. I never
repeat the passage once I have stated it and they have repeated it for
listening skills.
Watch out for computer Bibles, you
know those Franklin NIV/KJV Bibles. At
$79+ I allow them in class, but not in my drills, they usually win. In today's world, you may want to keep a
half-dozen Bibles around for those that left them at home or in the locker.
Do a Drill a couple of times and
hopefully you will be hooked for life.
At the end of each year, without effort, my students know how to find
Micah 5:2 in seconds, and virtually every passage in the Bible, can you? By the way, I allow any student to simply
stand (or raise hand, depending on how the classroom is laid out) and quote the
verse if they have it memorized they get the point. It defeats the looking up part, but it qualifies for the Psalm
119:9-11 award.
There are 11 verses in each Drill; one
extra to break any possible tie. By the
way, many times, I will make the 10th question worth enough that the loosing
team may tie the winning team, hey, this isn't the World Series.
By the way, if you decide to have a
lesson on God, don't forget to include in the middle of the lesson looking up
verses, to help interest and loosing the mind to the wandering fingers.
All scripture is in the New
International Version unless otherwise noted.
I have taught in Free Methodist, Interdenominational, Pentecostal and
Baptist schools over the last 20 years.
All of them suggested or required the NIV. The asterisk (*) indicates you can make a lesson from Systematic
Theology by Chafer, Volume 7.
